For years car shoppers have picked through Kelley Blue Book’s vehicle value guides to help them negotiate when buying or selling used cars. In its 86 year history the company has largely focused on commercial customers including dealers and finance and insurance companies, and government agencies.

Kelley’s move puts it in more direct competition with numerous consumer oriented car buying information providers like Edmunds.com, TrueCar.com, NADAGuides. com and MSN Autos.com.

The president of Kelley Blue Book, Jared Rowe told Driver’s Seat that the ad campaign will focus in part on car-shopping tools that consumers may not know about on the Blue Book site. They include a five-year cost-to-own analysis, fair purchase price based on what other buyers paid, and reviews by auto experts and everyday consumers.

The campaign begins today with 30 and 60 second TV spots covering a range of programming including the Summer Olympics on DirecTV, and on channels such as CNN, Fox News, ESPN, MTV, TNT, Comedy Central and the Food Network. The company said it expects the ads to reach 189 million people under a media-buying program that continues into the fourth quarter of this year.

The company worked with Detroit ad agency Doner to develop the TV campaign called Projection, which uses 3D technology to give the spots a modern, high-tech look, Rowe said.

While Kelley’s new focus on consumers may surprise some people, the bigger shocker may be the redesign of the company’s logo. The new logo retains the seal-and-ribbon styling of the old one, but now has more of a best-in-show look and appears less like a medal for a military uniform.

U.S. New Car Sales to Rise 19% According to Kelley Blue Book

Reports by Kelley Blue Book bring in good news for the company. New car sales in August are expected to jump 19% from a year earlier, as retail demand from consumers remains stable.

Kelley Blue Book, provider of new and used cars, estimates that sales will hit 1.3 million units this August. When adjusted for an additional selling day in August, car sales are expected to rise 14%. The company also stated that retail sales volume is expected to be relatively flat month-over-month, outperforming seasonal expectations.

Although economy still is a bit imbalanced and not fully recovering, consumer sentiment improved slightly last month thanks to a growing belief that the housing market has bottomed. Kelley Blue Book noted that improved confidence is great for auto sales, though high unemployment will continue to pressure sales in the long term.

The company expects the seasonally adjusted annual sales rates to jump 14.4 million and noted demand for compact, subcompact and hybrid cars has increased as consumers seek better offers and eco-friendly options from rising fuel prices. Compact car sales are expected to jump 31% from a year earlier while subcompact cars are expected to increase 42%. Mid-size car sales are projected to improve 24% while compact crossover sales are expect to climb 38%.
